There is nothing that compares to the beauty and richness of a platinum/palladium print. Once the standard method of printing, it is now one of the many alternative processes available to photographers today. While many photographers are working with a hybrid digital and analog workflow, most photos are captured digitally. Luckily, we can use any digital image to make an alt processing print. Using basic Photoshop techniques, you can convert any image to work in one of the historical processes. One of the most tonally rich and classic looks in alt processing is the palladium/platinum print. In this workshop, you will learn about the history of platinum and palladium printing and how to use modern tools and techniques to take advantage of this amazing printing process. If you have ever wanted to get started with alternative processing or are wanting to get a chance to try working in the magic of platinum and palladium, this workshop will make sure that you take the necessary steps to create some amazing prints.

You’ll learn:

  • An overview of what alternative processing is and the many formats out there
  • How to create digital negatives
  • How to setup and test a tonal curve
  • Chemistry, Safety and Developing techniques for alt processing
  • Platinum and palladium printing processes
  • Presentation and preservation of images

To help expedite the printing and hands on time in the workshop, we will print your initial negatives for you before the workshop begins to maximize your time printing and looking at your prints. We will also be using a chemistry method known as Na2 method which has a balance of working with the look and feel of a mixed palladium and platinum print. During this workshop, we will only be using this chemistry. While the process is the same, we will not be making pure platinum prints.

  • Minimal photoshop experience
  • Ability to convert and edit digital images (scan or capture) into black and white monochrome images
  • Able to send in images for workshop a week ahead of time (instructions to be provided)
