Students of the Photographic Center Northwest (PCNW) course, Space/Place: The Potential of Photo-Based Installation, present immersive and site-specific installations and will host an opening reception during the Capitol Hill Art Walk on June 8, 2017 (5 PM – 9 PM). PCNW Certificate Program student artist, Sarah D. King, explores variables of material, chemical interaction and light refractions in-order-to investigate perspective and perception from a conceptual standpoint. Using copper, sheet film, and cyanotype processes, “Suspension” is a site-specific installation occupying a small, delineated space which hovers between the formally designated layers of the PCNW main and second floors. Seattle University students, Jennifer Bacon and Elisa Pickett extend their current BFA exhibition into the PCNW space. Bacon’s installation, ‘Mona Mom’, explores her relationship and idolization of her mother. The large, wheat-paste mural is located on the building’s exterior south wall. Pickett’s installation, ‘Thrift Store Fictions’, explores the unreliable narrator in all of us. Using audio recordings, objects, and images, Pickett comments on the way we wear our fictions with pride, creating entertaining illusions of ourselves. Do we prefer the truth or the stories?

About the class: The boundaries between media and disciplines are more and more often being blurred in contemporary art. Artists are engaging with photographs in ways beyond the static single image on the wall. Students of the class address alternative strategies for presenting photo-based work, including site-specific installation, sculptural representation, and performance/time-based documentation.
