Details/Register
Join photographer Rick Wong during the two weeks of the Lunar New Year to photograph a slice of life in Seattle’s Chinatown International District (CID). Participants will learn about the history of the CID, the people living and working in the community, and the many customs and cultures of this neighborhood. See first-hand how the community is recovering and rebuilding from the impacts of the pandemic and anti-Asian racism. Participants will also learn about the Asian New Year, its customs, and how the different communities in the CID celebrate the Year of the Tiger in 2022.
The workshop will begin on January 29, 2022 with an introductory in-person meeting at Photographic Center Northwest (PCNW), combining presentation, discussion and Q&A. Participants will gain insight into technique, intent, context, composition and the creative use of the camera and lens to capture the essence of daily life in the CID. The session will also include a brief walking tour of the neighborhood. Participants will then have the opportunity to come together with the instructor for special scheduled photo meet ups in the CID during the Lunar New Year and plan their own self-directed time to photograph. The group will reconvene for a final session at PCNW on February 19, 2022 to discuss their experience and review their individual work.
Must be 18 years old to participate; open to all skill levels. Participants are welcome to use any camera available to them, including mobile devices. PCNW does have a limited number of digital cameras available for student use; if you would like to request use of a PCNW camera, please contact education@pcnw.org.

About the Photography as an Agent for Change Workshop Series:
Photographic Center Northwest (PCNW) is thrilled to announce our inaugural Agent for Change workshop series, in partnership with Amazon Photos. Beginning in 2022 we will offer a series of six free workshops and public lectures that explore photography as a tool for advancement in areas of social justice, racial equity, disability, environmental justice, visual literacy, storytelling, and cross cultural communications. Because the workshops are free and intended to reach a broad audience, a limited number of spots will be available to the public with the remaining spots reserved for partner nonprofits and community groups. A free public educator talk will coincide with each workshop, so if the workshop is sold out there will be another opportunity to hear the teaching artist speak on the subject.
At PCNW we are committed to providing accessible, inclusive photographic education and that often means through free programs and events. If you appreciate the work we do, please consider supporting us by donating or volunteering.
