Panel Discussion: The Evolution of Curation

In conjunction with PCNW’s current exhibition, The Boomer List, this panel looks at multiple generational viewpoints of exhibition curation. Once the fairly exclusive realm of scholars and art historians focused on relationships of and to art objects, the word ‘curate’ has permeated popular culture, and is today informed by artists, dealers, and other professionals participating in this practice. Panelists include: Sharon Arnold, Bridge Productions; Nina Bozicnik, Henry Art Gallery; Vicki Halper, independent curator; and discussion moderated by Negarra A. Kudumu, Manager of Public Programs at the Frye Art Museum.

Bridge Productions was founded by Sharon Arnold, who has a history of art writing and independent curating in Seattle since 2008. is located in Georgetown, in Seattle, Washington, and is home to several projects featuring a broad range of contemporary art and literature. Their focus is to create a strong, accessible connection to the arts through publications, monthly art exhibitions, events, curatorial collaborations, and curated box sets.

Nina Bozicnik is Associate Curator at the Henry Art Gallery. Her exhibitions include MOTHA & Chris E. Vargas present: Trans Hirstory in 99 Objects, currently on view, and Summer Wheat: Full Circle, which opens in early March. Her previous exhibitions at the Henry include, Michelle Handelman: Irma Vep, The Last Breath, Canvas Constructions: Karen Carson and Allan McCollum, and Six Weeks in Time, a group exhibition exploring qualities of being within and structuring the flow of time, co-organized with Emily Zimmerman. Bozicnik also served as organizing curator for the presentation of Senga Nengudi: Improvisational Gestures at the Henry last summer, and has helped realize projects by Ann Hamilton and Pae White. Prior to the Henry, Bozicnik was Assistant Curator at the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester, New Hampshire. She received her MA in Art History and Museum Studies from Tufts University and was the Koch Curatorial Fellow at deCordova Sculpture Park Museum in Lincoln, Massachusetts in 2008-2009.

Vicki Halper specializes in art of the Pacific Northwest and American craft. She was at the Renwick Gallery, the Seattle Art Museum, and has curated numerous exhibitions in the Northwest including with Bellevue Arts Museum, Museum of Northwest Art, Museum of Glass, Northwest African American Museum, and others. She is the co-editor of Choosing Craft: The Artist’s Viewpoint and Morris Graves: Selected Letters, and author of several exhibition catalogs. Halper’s most recent curation, Matched Makers: Northwest Artist Couples, at Museum of Northwest Art just closed. She is currently working on exhibitions for Wichita Art Museum and the Museum of Glass.

Residing at the intersection of contemporary art, curation, and critical theory, Negarra A. Kudumu’s practice is situated squarely within the domain of cultural production and consumption. She is ever investigating the ways in which these processes are visually and discursively interpreted, with a special interest in the emerging visual culture of the African continent, Iran, South Asia, and their respective diasporas. Negarra received her BA from Dartmouth College and her MA from Leiden University. She is an essayist and curator and the Manager of Public Programs at the Frye Art Museum.
