These images were created by the students of The Ruby Project, a ten-week photography program for young adult cancer patients and survivors. This class was inspired by Ruby Smith, a courageous young woman who experienced treatment with a camera in her hands, documenting her life with cancer through beautiful black and white photographs.
Ruby Project students spent the summer working on photographic assignments and attending darkroom sessions and lectures, immersing themselves in the history of analog photography. Throughout the course students developed a network of support with fellow young adult cancer survivors.
The Ruby Project is taught by John Blalock, a former oncology nurse and current Artist in Residence at Seattle Children’s Hospital and MFA candidate at the University of Washington, and Virginia Wilcox, an experienced youth arts educator and fine art photographer.
