Racing Days, an exhibition of photographs by Henry Horenstein.
Racing Days presents black and white photographs of the thoroughbred racetracks across the United States, a project Horenstein started in 1976. The images evoke the atmosphere of the tracks, and the myriad of characters, big and small. Horenstein focused on the workouts, the backstretch activity, and the track action. He captured the grooms, clockers and trainers to vendors of tout sheets, jockeys and, above all, the bettors. Horenstein will present a lecture the night of the opening entitled “Shoot what you Love” and talk about his many personal projects and published books.
Racing Days, 1976-1986, Henry’s first monograph, looks at the changing world of Thoroughbred racing through its people, places and, of course, horses. Limited copies of Racing Days will be offered for sale at PCNW.
Henry Horenstein has been a prolific chronicler of popular (and less popular) culture for over 30 years, having authored dozen of books, including some of the most widely used instructional texts in the field. Horenstein’s photographs have been widely exhibited including the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History, Annenberg Space for Photography; the International Museum of Photography, George Eastman House; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He is Professor of Photography at Rhode Island School of Design. His exhibition, Show, of burlesque dancers and performers was featured at PCNW in 2011.
Public lecture, book signing and exhibition opening Thursday, April 9, 6-9 pm at PCNW. Lecture: Shoot what you Love, 6:30 pm. Tickets: $10, $5 Members.
