Photography is an evolving medium, with many histories still to be explored. By The Book: 9+ Designers is one such foray, examining photographic books as a marker within the medium’s canon, and the role of designer within a traditional team of editors, photographers, printers and publishers engaged in the collaborative process of a book’s creation.
The designers featured in this exhibition began working on photography books before, or in the midst of, changing technologies, including the beginnings of desktop publishing in the 1980s, the emergence of the internet in the 1990s, and on-demand printing and binding in the early years of this century. Those same years brought an exponential increase in the production of photographic books, exhibitions, and collections as the medium achieved attention within the broader sphere of contemporary art. With the publication of Andrew Roth’s The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century in 2001, the photographic monograph was confirmed as an object worthy of collection, in addition to the photographs contained within them.
This relatively small pool of individuals in the United States played a major role in the contemporary history of photography through the seminal volumes they were a part of producing, including seminal books by Diane Arbus, Robert Adams, Richard Avedon, Elinor Carucci, Imogen Cunningham, Lee Friedlander, Danny Lyon, Sally Mann, Stephen Shore, Alfred Stieglitz, Sylvia Plachy, Mary Peck, Andres Serrano, Edward Weston, Art Wolfe, and more.
The exhibition will include over 100 books, including select titles chosen by each featured designer from his/her own career.

Wendy Byrne
