Got a stack of negatives around that you want to be able to edit and print? Have you opened the scanning software and felt like it sort of looks like an alien language? Do your current scans leave something to the imagination?

In this introduction to scanning workshop, you will get the chance to learn all about the basics of scanning film. The workshop will focus on scanning workflow techniques, how resolution and interpolation affect scans, introduces the industry-standard VueScan scanning software, and settings to achieve the best results from a scan. We will cover film scanning using flatbead scanners as well as scanning using PCNW’s direct digital capture system. We will also touch upon approaches and workflow for wetmount scanning.

Topics include:

  • Cleaning the scanner and images
  • Understanding channels
  • Understanding bit depth
  • Understanding resolution
  • Evaluating and correcting images
  • File formats
  • Managing color
  • Continuous tones versus dot pattern images
  • Scanning transparent film, positive or negative
  • Capturing dynamic range

If you have been scanning and not getting the results you want or are just getting started, join us for this workshop and finally make those negatives into positives.
