The Elements of Artists’ Books

Book Arts is a boundless medium that continues to see growth and development across the art world. Artist books can follow a formal structure or take a more sculptural unorthodox approach in which the book’s physical form follows its content. In this workshop, participants will learn what it means to call something an “artist book” and will look at and discuss novel book structures before sketching out their own one-of-a-kind model. Participants should come with an idea(s) for a book concept you would like to explore as well as a sketchbook/notebook.

Intro to InDesign for Photobooks

In this introductory Adobe InDesign workshop, you will create a 24-49 page photo publication. Discover how to work effectively with text by creating reusable styles, how to integrate and format images, and how to use time-saving techniques that keep designs consistent using parent pages. We will also cover how to share completed InDesign documents in digital and print formats. Participants will need to bring their own digital image files loaded on a portable drive or on the cloud and a general idea for your manuscript.

Artist Bookbinding: The Flatback Binding

The flatback is the basic hard cover binding and probably the most ubiquitous form of codex. This form of binding is marked by a hinged, flat spine, as opposed to a rounded back or exposed binding (or spiral-bound or scrolls, etc.); the pages are folded into sets of signatures, sewn, and then “cased-in” to the prepared board and cloth covers. In this workshop, participants will learn to prepare this traditional structure by hand using pre-printed pages. Please bring your pages prepared in signatures as instructed in the Intro to InDesign for Photobooks workshop. If you did not take that workshop, you may choose to bind a blank book, or you may purchase a book-in-sheets from Editions Studio on the day of the workshop.
