Got a stack of negatives around that you want to be able to edit and print? Have you opened the scanning software and felt like it sort of looks like an alien language? Do your current scans leave something to the imagination?

In this introduction to scanning workshop, you will get the chance to learn all about the basics of scanning film. The workshop will focus on scanning workflow techniques, how resolution and interpolation affect scans, introduces the industry-standard SilverFast and VueScan scanning software, settings to achieve the best results from a scan, and approaches to wet mount scanning. We will also cover film scanning using PCNW’s new direct digital capture system.

Cleaning the scanner and images
Understanding channels
Understanding bit depth
Understanding resolution
Evaluating and correcting images
File formats
Managing color
Continuous tones versus dot pattern images
Scanning transparent film, positive or negative
Capturing dynamic range
