Join Master Printer Ray Bidegain for this unique opportunity to discover the polymer plate photogravure process. During this two-day workshop, participants will learn hands-on how to take their original photographs and print them using etching inks and an etching press.
Topics we will cover include:
Digital positives files
Exposing and developing the polymer plates using direct to plate methods
Inks and materials needed for printmaking
Inking and wiping the plates
Paper selection
Printing the inked plates on a professional etching press.
All needed materials will be supplied and participants will leave the session with a small edition of photogravure prints from several images.
INSTRUCTOR BIO
Ray Bidegain was born in Tucson, Arizona and started studying photography in high school. At age 17 he began working on weekends for a large studio that offered wedding photography to the local community in Southern Arizona. Ray graduated from Brooks Institute of Photography in 1981 and returned to Tucson to operate his own studio before moving to Portland, Oregon. After 17 years as a studio portrait photographer, Ray turned to fine art photography, eventually teaching himself the art of platinum printing, photogravure and, later, wet plate collodion. Fascinated by both the science and the art of photography and printmaking, Ray is an engaging and respected photo instructor throughout the Pacific Northwest. Ray’s photographs are internationally collected, and his work has been exhibited across the United States, and in France, Germany, and Scotland.

A zine (pronounced “zeen”) is often a limited-run, handmade and affordable publication. Depending on your zine’s purpose and choice of materials and design elements, the production value can vary greatly from dollars to cents. In this one day workshop we will make Photography Zines and discuss the various ways that they can benefit photographers of all levels and genres. We will create reusable zine dummies with multiple binding techniques, tools and formats. In the process of making our zines, we will cover photo editing and sequencing methods, the many tools used, and different design, material and publishing options. Participants will need to bring at least 32 images, printed 4 images on 8.5” x 11” paper. These will be our mini work prints for editing, sequencing and laying out your zines. Laser printer or photocopier prints are ideal but any print method is fine as long as your prints are a maximum of 5.5” x 4.25”. Color images are ok, just keep in mind that any reproductions we make during the workshop will be black and white. Basic zine making tools and materials will be provided.
INSTRUCTOR BIO
Photographer Craig Mammano (1975, New Jersey) studied at Hunter College, The City University of New York. Spending the next few years working in the archives of the Black Star publishing company and assisting world-renowned documentary photographer, Joseph Rodriguez. His work has been exhibited at The Association of Photographers Gallery, London; FOTO FEST Biennial, Houston, TX; Home Space Gallery, New Orleans, LA; GET THIS Gallery, Atlanta, GA; and Permanent Gallery, Brighton, England, among others. Since 2001 he has been making photography zines and artist books, both self-published and working with many celebrated independent publishers including The Photocopy Club, Brighton/London; Swill Children, Brooklyn, NY; King Hamburger Eyes; and Kaugummi Books. He currently lives in South Beacon Hill, Seattle.

Join Mia McNeal for this one-day workshop to explore concepts in portrait photography both in the studio and in the field. From available light to continuous lights, speedlights, gels, and lighting modifiers, this will be an exploration into a multitude of techniques. The first portion of the session will take place in the studio at PCNW as Mia demonstrates working with a model using a variety of lighting from the essentials to more creative techniques to create a mood and tell a story. Later in the session, we will work both in the Daylight Studio and outdoors near PCNW, as Mia demonstrates techniques for working in available light conditions. Finally, we will look at how post production can be a powerful tool to enhance your portraits and make them stand out through editing.

Start off by shooting a roll of black and white film on your 35mm camera after an overview of how aperture, shutter speed and depth of field will affect your results. Then learn how to process your film and obtain negatives for printing.

This is a one-day workshop designed for beginners in the black and white darkroom, but it can also serve as a refresher for anyone who is rekindling a relationship with the darkroom. Bring negatives that you’ve processed (or had processed through a lab) and come explore the fun part: making prints! We’ll cover everything from the basic printing steps, to more advanced printing techniques like dodging, burning, and using filters. Most importantly you’ll have a chance to print in the black and white darkroom alongside a seasoned pro who can lend personalized advice – every print is different, and requires special attention! You can become a better darkroom printer in hours with the assistance and feedback of one of our instructors.

Printing and evaluating a contact sheet
Creating the best possible print from a negative, with correct exposure, contrast, and tone
Using different filter techniques, like split filter printing
Localized exposure control through dodging and burning
Print evaluation techniques

Join Kate Hailey for this one-day workshop to survey concepts in portrait photography both in the studio and in the field. Learn to use light to create mood and tell a story. Start the day in the studio at PCNW as Kate demonstrates working with lighting from the essentials to more creative techniques that push through tradition. We will cover essential concepts including Rembrandt, Split, beauty, high key, low key, rim light and more. Then we shift into more creative uses of light, to add color, mood, and story. Attendees will have access to a variety of types of lighting from Speedlights/Flashes to Continuous lights, Gels, lighting modifiers and more. Attendees will gain a firm understanding of these tools, how they work and how they can use them. Later in the session, the group will work both in the Daylight Studio and venture outdoors near PCNW as Kate demonstrates techniques for working in available light no matter the conditions. Kate will share tips on creating compelling compositions and making the most of a single location.

Join Paper Press Punch for a 2-day workshop, exploring the use of the Risograph duplicator to create 2-color photographs. You will learn the history and artistic use of the Risograph, in addition to the ins and outs of this quirky print process. We will go over how to prepare your files for printing, explore simple color separation techniques both digitally and manually, and experiment with different color combinations. Each participant will walk away with a small edition of their own Riso printed photos, as well as prints from all participants.
No experience necessary. All materials provided. Workshop will meet at Paper Press Punch Studios; details will be provided to attendees.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR / PAPER PRESS PUNCH
Paper Press Punch is a small Risograph print and book studio run by artists Jessica Hoffman and Justin Quinlan. Our community focused studio offers artists the opportunity to learn all about the quirkiness of the Risograph duplicator through workshops, open studio hours, and Zine of the Month Club. In addition to working with artists, we’ve collaborated with Short Run Seattle, Foundry10, yəhaw̓ Collective, Mount Analogue, SOIL Gallery, Henry Art Gallery, and many other local organizations to produce unique books and prints. Jessica comes from a book arts and printmaking background, earning an MFA in Book Art and Printmaking from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. She teaches photography at Seattle Central College and South Seattle College and is on the Advisory Board for Short Run Seattle. Justin studied painting at Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD. He was a past contributor to Seattle-based quarterlies Hair Flip, Thick as Thieves, and Intruder Comics. He’s been an exhibitor for several local comix fests and fairs, including Short Run Seattle, Exterminator City, Olympia Comics Fest, and Comix Thing in Portland, OR. We are located in the Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle at the Old Rainier Bottling Plant.

This is a one-day workshop designed for beginners in the black and white darkroom, but it can also serve as a refresher for anyone who is rekindling a relationship with the darkroom. Bring negatives that you’ve processed (or had processed through a lab) and come explore the fun part: making prints! We’ll cover everything from the basic printing steps, to more advanced printing techniques like dodging, burning, and using filters. Most importantly you’ll have a chance to print in the black and white darkroom alongside a seasoned pro who can lend personalized advice – every print is different, and requires special attention! You can become a better darkroom printer in hours with the assistance and feedback of one of our instructors.
Topics covered include:
Printing and evaluating a contact sheet
Creating the best possible print from a negative, with correct exposure, contrast, and tone
Using different filter techniques, like split filter printing
Localized exposure control through dodging and burning
Print evaluation techniques
Darkroom workflow
Printing in a community darkroom, and much more!
NOTES
Students must bring black and white negatives that are processed and ready for printing, and a box or folder to take home completed prints
PCNW will provide black and white paper for darkroom printing during the workshop

Go beyond a basic understanding of Lightroom CC to learn how to effectively print. We will look at printing yourself using Lightroom, as well as how to export your images to have them printed by someone else. We will discuss the importance of printer and paper profiles, understanding printer settings and dialogue, and more advanced output tools. Each participant will have the opportunity to print a few of their digital photos during the workshop.

Do you have a digital camera and want to learn how to get the most out of it, or simply need a refresher? Our one-day digital camera basics workshop will help you venture beyond auto mode by giving you a practical, hands-on understanding of digital photography capture and camera settings. We’ll cover camera setting options, how they relate, and which settings are appropriate for various situations (portraiture, nature, or sports photography for example). Take this workshop in tandem with our Digital Workflow Basics workshop for a comprehensive foundation for your digital photography.

Navigating the menu options of your camera
Image quality file types; JPEG vs RAW
Image Sensor Size
ISO vs Digital Noise
DSLR vs Mirrorless
How to make practical adjustments in aperture/shutter speed
Setting white balance and in-camera color settings

Students can bring their DSLR, Mirrorless, or point and shoot camera as long as it has manual controls. Please also bring your camera manual as all cameras are different.
