Photographic Center Northwest offers classes, workshops, and a nationally accredited Certificate Program in Fine Art Photography. Students interested in pursuing a bachelor of fine art degree may take advantage of our partnership with Seattle University. Perfect burning, dodging, flashing, bleaching, toning, and split filtration printing. Focus on subtleties of printing, luminosity and richness of tone in your prints. Prerequisites: Zone System Practicum, recommended Continuing Zone Color *FULL Tue 6-10 April 6-June 8 $630 + $20 materials Seth Thompson This introductory course will explore the aesthetic qualities of color photography and how to control the variables involved in making traditional color prints. Students will expose and print color negative film, study a variety of historical and contemporary topics in color photography, and participate in critiques. The creation of an individualized final project is encouraged. (3 credits; fulfills Certificate Program requirement.) Prerequisites: Any Photo I Class Thu 6-9:30 April 8-June 3 $630 + $20 materials Seth Thompson Students will experience the challenges of color photography through a series of assignments that build on Introduction to Color. The class will address portraiture, landscape, still life, and interiors. Each student will complete a small series of personal images. Lectures, slide presentations, critiques, and in-class printing will be part of this offering. (3 credits; fulfills Certificate Program requirement: Advanced Color) Prerequisites: Introduction to Color Alternative Processes Thu 10-1 April 1-June 3 $630 + $60 materials Rebekah Rocha Unconventional materials, techniques and experimental processes will be the focus of this technical and conceptual class as we explore alternative methods for creating photography and developing a body of work. Students will work with black and white liquid emulsions on a variety of surfaces, collage, assemblage and the construction of artists' books & more. We will also look at the work of other mixed media/photographic artists, including the Starn Twins, Carrie Mae Weems, Robert Rauschenberg, and discuss how their process complements their concepts. (3 credits; fulfills Certificate Program requirement: Alternative Practice) Prerequisites: Any Photo I Class Tue 1-3 April 20 - May 18 $210 + $40 materials Jahnavi Lisa Barnes This course will present options for creating photographic images through demos of early photographic processes and other creative possibilities for enlarged negatives. We will explore and practice basic Photoshop corrections for getting your B&W or Color images (converted to B&W) to look good on the screen in order to make a successful enlarged digital negative for contact printing. We will work with the traditional tools of burning and dodging, exposure and contrast, derived from old school darkroom techniques to create enlarged digital negatives through computer correction and print out. This process successfully bridges 19th and 21st century tools available for photographic image making and prepares you for applying enlarged digital negatives to alternative forms of photographic print making. This short course is strongly recommended for students enrolling in future Alternative Practice classes including Introduction to Non-Silver Processes and Gum Dichromate Printing. (1 credit) Prerequisites: Digital Imaging I or equivalent experience Studio Classes Mon 1-4 March 29-June 7 $630 + $30 materials Brian Allen Become more aware of how light shapes every photograph. Master the fundamentals of studio strobe, tungsten lights, and portable flash to create photographs that match your vision. Assignments can be processed and printed at a commercial lab or done with digital media. Sync cord or remote required. (3 credits; fulfills Certificate Program requirement) Prerequisites: Photo I: Black and White + Intro to Color or Digital equivalent Advanced Seminar: On Location Lighting Thu 6-9 April 1-June 3 $630 + $30 materials Brian Allen Apply your knowledge of studio lighting techniques in the field through this advanced lighting class. Using portable equipment or studio setups, learn a versatile set of skills that you can apply to portraiture, architectural photography or any subject in the field. This class includes three field trips and lighting kits will be available for students to check out in order to complete individual assignments. Film and/or digital may be used in this class. This course will encourage students to situate their own personal project within a critical dialogue of fine art photography. Master a process that will ensure the best possible print quality, learn color management, and develop the ability to create pristine digital prints from scanned negatives or captures from your digital camera. (3 credits) Prerequisites: Digital Imaging I Digital Imaging I: Photoshop Basics Section 1: Fri 5-8 April 9-June 11 $630 Juan Aguilera Section 2: Wed 1-4 March 31-June 2 $630 John Blalock Survey the applications of Photoshop CS4 in our new Mac lab in this introduction to the digital imaging process. Explore the digital darkroom using familiar photographic concepts, as well as new digital tools. Learn basic editing functions, and move into more complex operations with layers, masks, color correction and printing. Basic computer experience and skills required. None Digital Imaging II: Intermediate Photoshop Mon 6-9 April 5-June 14 $630 + $25 materials Juan Aguilera Build on concepts introduced in Digital Imaging I by learning to use Photoshop as an interactive, real-time photography lab. The course will emphasize layer-based fine-tuning of tone and color, retouching, sharpening and the development of an individualized workflow. Reynol This course presents introductions to many of the basic concepts, issues and techniques related to designing, developing and deploying a photography Web site. During the course, students will learn about Web design, HTML, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), and basic JavaScript. While learning how to create a simple home page, a photo gallery and additional pages relating to their web site, the students will learn to use Photoshop to create navigation buttons, image-thumbnails and will receive individual help preparing images for their site. It is for the advanced photographer ready to create and present a portfolio to galleries. This course covers all aspects of fine art portfolio presentation, including editing and sequencing images, the creation of an artist's statement and how to approach galleries and prospective clients. This course will explore the intersection of documentary and photographic portraiture, framing questions about media, technology, culture, and social networks that span the globe. Prerequisites: Any Photo I & II class Mon 6-9 March 29-June 7 $630 + $10 materials Mateo Zachai Sequences in films, -- a car chase, romantic moment, or a slowly unfolding mystery -- have a potential to create meaning beyond a single images or scene. Find inspiration for a photographic narrative through movies, create a scene and develop a storyboard for your photographic project. Experiment with cinematic styles as a way to expand your visual and photographic vocabulary. (3 credits) Prerequisites: Any Photo I Class Wed 6-9 March 31-June 2 $630 + $20 materials Mateo Zachai Defy conventional modes of working with photo sensitive paper, film or the electronic sensor in your digital camera. Make camera-less photographs, photo-sculpture, and reclaim creative processes that have traditionally remained outside of photographic practice. In this class you will be exploring experimental photography through the movements of Dada, Constructivism, Surrealism, and Conceptual Art. We will be looking the past and contemporary artists that have used and continue to explore this medium including such people as Hannah Hoch, George Grosz, John Heartfield, Man Ray, Christian Schad, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Henri-Cartier Bresson, Sophie Calle and Adam Fuss and many others. These artists explored both their own visual representations of their environment, free associations, and experimentations. (3 credits; may fulfill Certificate Program Requirement: Alternative Practice) Prerequisites: Any Photo I & II class Photography in the 21st Century Thu 5:30-8 April 1-June 3 $630 Bridget Nowlin From a contemporary perspective, engage significant subjects and artists through visits to museums and galleries, lectures, and creative projects. The class will emphasize the work of living artists, visual culture, and shifts in photography that have been influential in the past decade. Additional field trip dates TBD. (3 credits; fulfills Certificate Program Requirement: History of Photography) None Mon 6-9 March 29-June 7 $420 Nancy Levine This seminar is designed for photography students who want to explore a deeper level of a vision they already call their own. Throughout the course, students will meet individually with the instructor to discuss and evaluate the students' work in progress while surveying photographic history to broaden perspectives on one's own vision. Assignments will be generated and motivated by the student's interests and the instructor's suggestions of ideas for further exploration. The desired outcome is a body of work, to be presented at the final meeting, that reflects the student's vision. Only the first and last class will meet with the whole group. There are 4 individuals meetings during the quarter. This course is recommended for students approaching their Thesis year, or for those refining a project for Fine Art Portfolio.
