Born and raised in Seattle, Lance Mercer began photographing the burgeoning grunge music scene at the age of 13. After studying commercial photography locally, he became a fulltime freelance photographer in 1991. Though music was his first love, it was always more than just an audio track. Fascinated by the life of rock and the cathartic ritual between fan and musician, he captured the energy, drive and passion of individuals that changed music history. Some were great, even if only for the duration of a two-minute tune. Others became Soundgarden, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam, to name a few. He was invited to tour with Pearl Jam from 1992 to 1995 as their official photographer, and released two subsequent books related to this period: a retrospective with fellow Seattle photographer, Charles Peterson, called Place/Date (1997) and 5X1: Pearl Jam Through the Eye of Lance Mercer (2007). Today Mercer continues his career as a visual storyteller, applying his talents in the music, editorial, and commercial world to production, direction, and filming of documentary projects. His photographs continue to be internationally published and exhibited; he has taught classes and workshops at PCNW.
