Description:
Learn basic digital camera functions, printing techniques, and technology as well as core photographic concepts such as depth of field, shutter speed, exposure, color theory, and composition. The focus of this 10 week course will be to gain a working understanding of digital photography — fundamental camera operations, photographic styles, and processes used to create images that reflect both a technical and aesthetic awareness. Through an intensive, hands-on approach, the course will cover camera menus and functions, exposure techniques, an introduction to history, composition, and creative expression. Classes will incorporate lectures, demonstrations, slide shows, discussions and critiques, all of which will encourage students to explore the full potential of the medium. Students must have a digital SLR camera with full manual control, including a range of shutter speeds and aperture settings.
Students should be prepared to spend a minimum of 8-12 hours a week on assignments for this course; students will be expected to present prints of their work for class critiques.
Rental fees and printing fees (neither included in tuition) are charged for use of the Photo Center digital lab to complete assignments outside of class; a list of rental and printing rates for students is available on the Hours/Rates page. Students in this class may opt to have assignments printed through the Photo Center digital printing service; visit the Students page for digital printing service rates and information.
