THESIS & ALUMNI EXHIBITIONS

Michael Clements

We’re excited to announce our Thesis & Alumni New Work Exhibitions. Every year the Photo Center celebrates the graduates of the Certificate in Fine Art Photography program through a comprehensive exhibition of their thesis work. Each thesis project consists of a cohesive series of photographs, a visual and conceptual manifestation of a focused subject. These works not only mark the culmination of a year’s worth of artistic practice for each artist but they also represent a new generation of Seattle-based artists. This year’s graduates are Michael Clements and Andy Cox.

Paul Ford, Paris Metro

In conjunction with this year’s Thesis Exhibition, the Center will be showcasing new works by alumni of our Certificate Program. This is the first time we are uniting several generations of picture-making in one gallery space, bringing light to Photo Center graduates who are now thriving contemporary artists and vital members of the national and international art community.

A Word From Our Executive Director, Annie Van Avery
The Photo Center is launching a new communications campaign to keep YOU, students and alumni, in the loop with news about what happening in the Photo Center community. Our first letter is from our Executive Director, Annie Van Avery and talks about the exciting transformation the Photo Center’s second floor will undergo this summer; including the removal of our color analog darkroom and addition of a daylight studio/classroom and second media lab. Read here:

Dear Photo Center Students and Alumni,
I am thrilled that with the help of our Student and Alumni Committee we are launching this initiative to regularly communicate with you what is going on at the Center. So many of you have lent your support and advocacy to the Photo Center throughout the years and we want you to know that you, our community, is what keeps us a vital part of the lives of photographers in our region and beyond. These quarterly newsletters will help keep you in the loop about the Center’s current projects, future goals, and relevant discussions happening with the staff, faculty, and board.

Virginia Wilcox - Jiafa In The Arboretum, 2011

Seattle-based photographers Rafael Soldi and Virginia Wilcox will be hosting a ONE NIGHT ONLY preview of their new work at the Photo Center on Thursday, May 26 from 6-9pm.

Both artists will be sharing analog color portraiture work. Wilcox’s new work explores the impact of technology and social media in today’s society, often showing my subjects in trance, disconnected and absorbed by their mobile devices. Soldi’s photographs and self-portraits present a personal narrative, chronicling a  struggle to reconstruct a life without the one thing he thought defined him.

In addition to the exhibited works, they will be offering a limited edition print set of two images (one by each artist).

Long Shot: Follow Our Lead

(Thanks to Steve Utaski for this wonderful video reminder!)

Long Shot 2011 has been gaining momentum with over 250 photographers already signed up. We have also already raised $2,000! We have put together a video (above) to help you understand how to navigate this wonderful community event and fundraiser. Also, below are some other tips and reminders about Long Shot:

  • This event is open to EVERYONE. Anyone can participate, with any camera and any level of experience. You can use your iPhone or your View Camera, film or digital- you call the shots!
  • You don’t have to shoot for 24 hours, you can shoot for as long or short as you want.
  • Your participation supports not only our educational programs but also our outreach initiatives, helping us bring more photo-based programs to our at-risk community.
  • Your participation automatically grants your work a spot in our gallery. Our Long Shot exhibition will open on July 23, 2011.
  • Not in Seattle during the June 17-18 marathon? That’s no excuse, we have photographers participating from the U.K., Tanzania, Iceland, Japan and all over the U.S. including Alaska, NYC, Chicago, Maryland, Portland, California and more!
